One of the most important things for you to realize if you have written a book – and especially if you have self-published a book, or have been published by a small press – is that you are going to have to do a lot of the leg work (as far as promotion goes) yourself; this is not necessarily a bad thing, however, as you can do a lot more on your own than a publishing house could ever hope to do – and when you do these things, you will be able to create a significant spike in sales.

Creating a strong web presence so that people know you are around is the first thing you will want to do (which you will want to be working on even before your book is published – but it is never too late to start, if you have pushed off doing this!); you can do this by running a good website, and you can add to this web presence of yours by mining such sites as facebook, goodreads, and twitter.

After you have gotten your website (and the rest of your web presence) off the ground – using it a means by which to interact with others and make sure they know that your book exists – you will want to start using these contacts to do some giveaways; you can do giveaways of your book, or even of another item you have purchased, as such giveaways will give others a chance to help you spread the word about your book, which will help you quite a bit in the long run.

And one of the biggest things you will need is patience when you are trying to make sure people know about your book; you will obviously hope to see huge sales numbers right off the bat, but the longer a book is out there, the more people will know about it – and the more people who know about it, the more your success will grow. Continue to do whatever you can to get the word out there, and in time you will experience that success you long to achieve.
