Now that summer is approaching, the pressure to start planning your family vacation begins to set in. Of course, a family vacation is supposed to be a fun, memorable event – but if money is tight, it can be a supremely stressful event for the parents! One of the great solutions, when money is tight, is planning a “staycation” – a vacation at home – instead of planning one for the road!
The first step of planning a staycation is setting the dates and making sure everyone recognizes that these days will be treated the same as if you were on vacation! This can be especially difficult if you have teenagers, as they might try to say that the staycation is a “lame” idea, and that they want to hang out with their friends. But if you want to have a successful staycation, it will be important that you make sure everyone is around; your kids should not be off with their friends, and you and your spouse should not be off shopping or playing golf!Moved Permanently

Another big key to a successful staycation is keeping the staycation shorter than a regular vacation would be, as this will make it easier to keep everyone around. If you would maybe take a week-long vacation were you to travel, shorten this to a four day vacation if you are staying at home. And when you think about it, two days of your travel vacation is usually travel, so your staycation is actually still providing you with plenty of time. And once you have the days set aside and have convinced everyone to be there, the biggest thing will be making sure you have things planned. If you have a staycation that just forces everyone to sit around the house, they will be on the phone, in front of the television, with a book, et cetera. Instead, you should treat things like you would a travel vacation – planning games for the time when you are all at home, and planning events for your time away from home. There are many people who find that their best family vacations are their staycations; you can find the same thing, if you plan correctly!
