It is becomming more common for cats to not be delclawed. Many veterinarians are no longer doing this. If you have decided to get a cat and ether can’t have it declawed or won’t have it declawed, you may be wondering what your options are to deal with there incessant tearing at the carpet and furniture.
You could purchase some nail covers for your cat. You actually superglue these caps right over the top of their nails. Don’t worry they fall off when the cat sheds that nail sheath. These will have to be re put on periodically as they come off over time. This is a humane way to deal with your cats nails and they don’t mind them at all. The bonus is these come in a rainbow of colors so you can have a bit of fun with this too. You could also consider purchasing scratch toys. There are some toys that are created with corrugated cardboard that has catnip embedded in it. The catnip helps to reinforce using these cardboard toys to scratch on over your chairs. You can also purchase replacement scratcher pads, which makes this a great buy. You will find the scratching post is a bit different then the scratching toy. The posts typically have a heavy natural cord such as hemp wrapped around it. Cats seem to love the texture of these corded scratching posts. They can last for years so they are well worth the price. Place this close to a piece of furniture your cat has previously used and it should help curtail his scratching. A finaly idea is if you have the room for it, you could get a carpet cat playground. I would compare these to a tree house in their structure. They are typically covered completely by carpet. Cats love to climb, sleep, and play all over this type of toy. These are a more on the expensive side compared to the other options I have listed here, but if you have the room your cat will thank you for it. Don’t feel like you have to declaw your cat if you don’t want to. Often times if cats are given the option they can be trained to use these ideal things to scratch on. It may take a bit of persistence on your part, but it can certainly be done.Tags: General
